The first step is to orient your new or recare patient to
cosmetic dentistry. Have the Lorin Library Smile Style
Guide displayed throughout your office and reception room.
In addition, have before and after photo albums available
whenever the patient is waiting.
Second, the doctor, assistant or hygienist should discusses
the new, high tech equipment for computer imaging. If
there is a cosmetic interest, review the Smile Style Guide
with the patient and have them select the smile design they
like best. If they can't decide on thier own gently suggest
what you feel might look best.
Take a diagnostic series of photos included a well composed
portrait as a routine part of the new or recare patient examination.
Transfer the images to your computer, simulate the patient's
new smile, and create a digital slide show of the diagnostic
images.
Prepare for the consultation armed with your computer slide
show, the Smile Style Guide, and the cosmetic simulation when
indicated. Include any other diagnostic aid you feel necessary
to communicate to the patient what they want.
Show the patient the diagnostic images to make them aware
of the cosmetic and restorative concerns. Then show them the
solution. Make alterations if necessary in front of the patient
as you and the patient make final decisions about how the
smile should look.
Print the results so that the patient has a visual record
of your discussion. No pressure for you or the patient! If
the patient does not say yes to treatment immediately, they
will have the "New Smile Brochure" to study at home.
More often then not, they will call for treatment.
